About Us

Our
Story

Every year, thousands of veterans in the UK face challenges associated with transitioning back to civilian life. Mental health issues, including PTSD, anxiety, and depression, are prevalent among this population, often compounded by feelings of isolation and disconnection.

Our surfing programs are designed to create a safe and inclusive environment where veterans can connect with one another, share their experiences, and rebuild their confidence. Through our initiatives, participants learn valuable skills, experience the therapeutic benefits of being in nature, and develop a strong sense of camaraderie.

We have witnessed firsthand the positive impact of our programs, with many
veterans reporting increased self-esteem, reduced anxiety, and improved mental health.
Our programs not only focus on surfing but also include workshops on mental health awareness, mindfulness, and personal development. We collaborate with mental health professionals to ensure that our approach is holistic and tailored to the specific needs of our participants.
Meet the Team,
Andy,
Raised in a small Dorset town, I first visited Newquay at age five, where I learned to bellyboard. This early experience began my long-term association with the ocean.
Subsequently, I worked as a lifeguard and canoe instructor, both during my time in the army and later with the Scout Association.
In 2006, I relocated permanently to Newquay with my partner. We operated a surf lodge and were approached to place a Help for Heroes collection tin on our bar.
Over time, I became involved with various surf-related charities and later established Newquay Surf Veterans in 2014.

Clare,
Raised in a market town in Dorset and visiting Cornwall regularly for holidays, Cornwall became a familiar place.
After finishing school, I considered joining the WREN, but was advised by the school's careers office that acceptance would be unlikely. As a result, I began an apprenticeship in hairdressing.
I later had two children and worked as a PA.
In 2006, my partner proposed relocating, and we moved to Newquay.
We gradually became active within the veterans community, where I listened to members discuss challenges with civilian life. To better support them, I completed an NCFE in person-centred therapy, followed by a full diploma, qualifying as a counsellor.
During this period, my husband started Newquay Surf Veterans, and I assisted as a welfare helper.
Richard,
Originally from Wales, I enlisted in the Royal Air Force at 17 and served in various regions worldwide, including three and a half years in Northern Ireland. After completing my service, I spent over a decade working as a contractor across Europe. Driven by a passion for travel, I returned to the UK ten years ago, where I met my wife. Circumstances led me to relocate to Newquay, and my wife soon joined me; we have been settled here ever since. Through Andy, I was introduced to NSV and had the fortunate opportunity to be involved in guiding this significant project forward during its next phase of development.
